1821: Flora, this wooden sailing schooner wrecked in the shallows in the early hours of the morning on the southern point of Robben Island in Table Bay in the Western Cape. The survivors were isolated on Robben Island as there had been a cholera epidemic in Batavia. After a few days in isolation, they were brought to Cape Town on board the Perseverance.
1865: Kadie, this iron steam-powered coaster wrecked on the West Bank of the Breede River in the Western Cape. On the day of the loss, whilst crossing the bar, a sudden southwester picked up and it drove the Kadie aground on the jagged rocks of Kabeljoubank. At the time of the loss, the Kadie had rounded the Cape a record 240 times in only six years of service. Part of the Kadie’s remains are still visible on the beach today.
1885: Welcombe, this iron steam-powered ship wrecked at the mouth of the Great Fish River/Groot-Visrivier in the Eastern Cape.
1941: Thode Fagelund, this steel steam-powered freighter foundered after being struck by a torpedo fired from the Vichy French submarine Le Héros (Lemaire) about 50km off Kayser’s Beach in the Eastern Cape.
