1872: Magneten, this Norwegian sailing brig of 205 tons, commanded by Captain Berentsen was driven ashore between the old timber shed and Beacon Isle in a south-easterly gale in Plettenberg Bay in the Western Cape. It is uncertain whether the vessel was grounded and refloated or whether it wrecked. No lives were lost.
1942: Argo, this motor-powered coaster was torpedoed by the Italian submarine Ammiragilo Cagni, about 75km south of Cape Point in the Western Cape. Of the 36 that were on board, 18 died during the attack and 18 survivors were spotted by RAF pilots on the 1st of December and were picked up by British Navy vessels within two hours.
