The Energy Endurance was a Liberian motor tanker that was on route from Ras Tanura for Europe carrying a cargo of crude oil.
On the 9th April 1981 she sustained extensive hull damage in a gale/storm off Transkei; She was taken to Algoa bay & thence to Cape Town.
From Cape Town she was subsequently taken to Kaohsiung & broken up.
She was previously named Bergehus between 1967 and 1979.
The Energy Endurance is yet another case of a loaded VLCC suffering serious damage to a badly corroded forepeak tank off South Africa. In this case, the damaged involved the forward bunker tank.
Despite the fact that the ship was leaking, the South African authorities allowed the ship to be towed into Algoa Bay and lightened. The ship was in such bad condition, she was scrapped.
It is quite possible a 250,000 ton spill was averted.
