1857: Lady Kennaway, this wooden sailing vessel wrecked in the mouth of the Buffalo River in East London in the Eastern Cape. On the 23rd, the 231 immigrants that were on board had disembarked and then, while the vessel was lying in anchor, a south-easterly gale drove it onto a sandy spit/the bar at the mouth of the Buffalo River, 300-400 m east of the lighthouse, where it wrecked.
