On 05/02/2019 at 12:15 pm, Rainer skippered the Expert Tours Vessel and excited Guests on a Whale and Dolphin spotting trip to St Croix, leaving from GQDSAC at 12:15 pm.
After a quick morning trip in a light aircraft to spot bait balls, whales and dolphins we left the Port of Gqeberha to the area off St Croix where we had first spotted activity. On board was a team from the German Magazine, GEO, along with two other guests (GEO is a family of educational monthly magazines similar to the National Geographic magazine. It is known for its detailed reports and pictures). A fast ride out to St Croix and we spotted diving birds with tell tale splashes from dolphins and whale blow.
Huge rafts of penguins were in the water along with gannets, cormorants, cape terns and gulls wheeling and diving on the fish below.
Bottlenose Dolphins busily feeding evaded the Brydes Whales filling up on a lunch of sardines – the sardine season is upon us and predators are attracted to Algoa Bay to partake in this feast.
